The Black Book of Saddam Hussein
2 million victims

One million civilian deaths, two million victims altogether: this was the toll of Saddam Hussein’s thirty five year long dictatorship.

The Black Book of Saddam Hussein is the first book of its kind. A complete assessment of the litany of crimes committed under the aegis of the Iraqi dictator, it is written and compiled by a team of experts on Iraq and the Middle East from around the world. The places, the dates, the nature of the crimes: no stone is left unturned.

This is a work of history and reference, but it is also a work in memory of the victims. It does not aim to establish a hierarchy of the crimes. Bringing together cold facts and figures, it provides a devastating appraisal of this regime of terror and a valuable insight into the region today.

The authors include eminent historians, researchers, journalists and jurists.

Edited by Chris Kutschera, a regular contributor to Le Nouvel Observateur, Le Monde Diplomatique, Les Cahiers de l’Orient, Middle East Magazine, he is a highly regarded specialist on the Middle East and the author of several books in French on the Kurdish people.

Preface by Bernard Kouchner, KBE, a co-founder of Doctors Without Borders, and UN Special Representative to Kosovo from 1999 to 2001.

Praise for The Black Book of Saddam Hussein:

“A fascinating book.” Le Parisien

“This book shows without bias to those who still doubted it that Iraq did hide a weapon of mass destruction: Saddam Hussein himself.” Carrefour Savoirs

“This book tries to make the whole inventory of the exactions of the tyrant and eventually lets his too often neglected victims speak.” Nord Éclair
